PEDRO PINTO DA SILVA

I have lived many lives: throughout most of them I have drawn and painted. As a molecular cell biologist in the USA I studied cell membranes, the definers of spaces in all cells. I spent many hours observing them with the electron microscope. Membranes are, to me, at the very origin of form. Life, with cells ant their membranes defining for the first time IN vs. OUT, represents the second stage of Cosmology. Membranes represent the birth of Otherness/Alterity. Art has been next to me since my early twenties . I believe that in art all can and should be said, with beauty as a constant companion. My work has as sources van Gogh (and his Japanese influences) , Franz Marc and Vassily Kandinsky's early magical "scapes". As a doctorate student in Berkeley (Univ. California) I lived through virtually the entire time of the "hippie" movement and student revolution (1966-1972). At present, my drawings explore the origin of language, from actual event to its description (Noam Chomsky). I pursue several projects at the same time, as I did as cell biologist. Currently I live in the pre-Alps, at one thousand meters, overlooking Lake Maggiore, next to Switzerland.
